Warning: Movie Spoilers Ahead!
Welcome back, fellow movie fans! This is the last post in the comedy genre, before moving on to drama next week. Today’s movie is Bridesmaids (2011), starring Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Rebel Wilson, and Melissa McCarthy. This movie is predominantly a comedy, full of explosive laughs thanks to the talents of the supporting cast, but the heart of this movie is a bit more serious than my last post.
Kristen Wiig, playing the awkward and lovable Annie, is on a mission to discover who she is and how her friendship with Lillian (Maya Rudolph) will continue as new people come in and out of their lives. Because of this plotline, it’s hard to not be emotionally pulled by characters as they bond, fight, and make-up. The movie got mostly positive reviews, scoring a very solid 89% on RottenTomatoes, a notorious movie review platform.
Movie critic Yasmin Omar, of Harper’s Bazaar raved that the movie highlighted “laugh-out-loud displays of pettiness, pride and passive-aggression… [which] incisively examines the delicate dynamics of a female friendship group,” further describing the movie as “a meaningful platonic love story between women, underpinned by a strong comic vein.” With such good reviews, it would have been impossible for me to not direct your attention to this movie, and highly recommend it as a go-to funny movie for any girls night.
Honestly, not much can be critiqued about this movie; I think the only way any audience wouldn’t like it is if they weren’t interested in female-dominated comedies, in which case I would say they’re missing out! This movie is a great pick-me-up, revealing the harsh truths about adulthood and the friendships we forge along the way. From owning a bakery to being her best friend’s maid of honor, Annie seems to have it together, but the audience very quickly realizes that’s not the case. She’s full of uncertainties, which Lillian’s upcoming wedding exacerbates. But in the end, as it is a feel-good movie, Annie is able to accept herself and her life, acknowledging that things will change and that it’s okay. This is a rockstar cast with a fantastic plot, and shouldn’t be missed! Check it out and let me know what you think in the comments!
