Action: Everything, Everywhere, All At Once

Warning: Movie Spoilers Ahead!

Everything, Everywhere, All At Once (2022) perfectly summarizes itself in the title. The plot is quite literally everything. everywhere. all. at. once. The summary is an “... action adventure about an exhausted Chinese American woman (Michelle Yeoh) who can't seem to finish her taxes,” and I guess this is true, but wow does it take twists and turns. Every single time I thought the movie was over, it kept going. The movie is divided into thirds and - as you guessed it - each part is related to a section of the title, respectively. Honestly, this was not my favorite movie. I didn’t think it would end. But, I do have my reasons for reviewing it here and even going so far as to recommend it.

Personally, I’m in agreement with movie critic Tom Shone, who said that this film was “exhilarating, funny and moving… [but] also messy, overstuffed and a trifle exhausting.” It is exhausting and messy and long - but it is also so very touching when you finally get to the core of the film.

It’s all about family. And the thing that makes this action movie stand out against others, because we all know we think of Marvel or DC when it comes to action and I thought this would be one too, is that it really is one woman trying to do right by her family. Her husband and daughter, the life they all have, is not the life she imagined for herself. She has to come to terms with her choices and realizes that while she might not have everything she wanted, she does have even more. It’s cheesy, and I definitely would have rolled my eyes, but it is an action film too. And wow does it have action. There’s fights, weird magic, and just plain strange sequences, but that’s what makes it so successful. The clutter of the film makes getting to the core that much more enjoyable. If you have enough time, definitely give this one a watch and let me know what you think in the comments!
